| Event Review - DIY Search Engine Optimisation |

The 'dark art' of Search Engine Optimisation was the subject of this morning's event held at Denny Bros Conference facilities in Bury St Edmunds. To some this was an introduction to a whole new vocabulary of terms and an awakening that just because you have a website it doesn't necessarily mean people will find it!
Pete Doyle from Jan Klin Associates gave us a swift but very clear run through many of the elements to be considered when optimising each page of our websites. Pete emphasized the need for this to be an ongoing process rather than a one-off, job done! The requirements of the search engines change frequently as they find cleverer ways of attributing value to each web page, based on real use rather than just clever optismisation.
Pete also took us through a useful presentation on the values of Pay per Click marketing and how to do it.
Those who attended the event and requested to be sent links for these presentations will receive the links directly from Jan Klin Associates.
Tips from attendees:
To keep your web address for you make sure you buy .co.uk .com .net and obvoius variations or others will. Catherine Buchanan - 4XtraHands.com
The Google web spider searches sites approximately every fortnight so put new content on your site at least fortnightly to improve your Google rating.
Your ISP should guarantee a minimum 'up time'. If Google cannot spider your site to to it being down it will penalise your site ranking. Geoff Riley - Tyreman
Seek advice before trying any SEO tips you hear 'in the pub'. There are lots of 'wise' people (and regretably even some web developers) who will advise you on clever sneaky ways of improving your Google ranking (such as repeating key words in white text on white background and copying word for word your highest competitors meta description). But, the people at Google are not silly and have built in mechanisms for spotting these games. They can even blacklist you if you use them. Catherine Turner - eBusiness Forum
Google are keen on promoting environmentally friendly sites so if you are actively reducing your company's ecological footprint make sure you tell everyone... Peter Banks - Datapartners
Finally, from me - check out IT Savvy which contains many links for SEO and articles on good practice. The links can be found by following the path: At Work, Marketing, Website Development, SEO
