Event Review - Keeping your Business Safe Online
Posted:

Over 40 'early birds' met this morning to hear and discuss the problem of keeping business safe online and to learn about new government initiatives to assist us to be better informed and be assured of quality.

John Lyons, Group Security Adviser for securetrading outlined some of the threats that are out there on the Internet and gave us advice on sites we could use to find help and advice. securetrading are one of the partners involved in the GetSafeOnline initiative which gives advice to businesses and home users on best practice for keeping safe online. The link to their site is on the Links page.

WARPS (Warning Advice Reporting Point) was introduced to us by John Harrison from the government department NISCC (you'll have to look at the slides to find out what NISCC means!). WARPS can be set up amongst real or virtual groups and offer filtered warnings about updates for software glitches, viruses, trojans etc. As an extension of that, a WARP can become a community for sharing best practice and advice to its members as well as encouraging the reporting of experiences leading to collective learning.

Sharon Wiltshire from CSIA told us about the work that the Cabinet Office has done, in partnership with public and private enterprises, to encourage awareness of risks and threats from the Internet. These include a new Claims Tested Mark for security products and services (so you will know if the Spyware you are tempted to download is real or offering fake and damaging promises). This mark was only launched this year so don't panic if your security products do not yet carry the mark.

We also learnt about the new Institute of Information Security Professionals which will give us some assurance of quality. Link is on the site.

Finally, a plug for GetSafeOnline and IT Safe who provide a newletter with security issues in plain and understandable language. Again, see the Links page.

So, lots of information to take away and check out. Please see the presentations for more details.

The attendee sheet will not be available for this event as bookings were taken through the Suffolk Network site.
