Event Review - High Performance Websites - a look under the bonnet!
Posted: 22-Feb-07

This morning's event was about high performance websites that integrate data processes behind the scenes - or 'under the bonnet'!

These websites are top of the range, the pinnacle of what many businesses aspire to and include automate business processes as well as integrate email marketing, management information and manage customer data. This type of website comes at a higher cost than a straightforward site but it provides an integrated platform on which a business can grow - in the knowledge that their processes are efficient and encourage customer confidence. Other benefits include the ability to run the business from anywhere, and to maintain limited staffing levels because the system is handling much of the admin.

First up was Hugo Rose from My Parcel www.myparcel.co.uk This is a start-up business addressing the increasing problem of being at home to receive delivery of our online purchases.

My Parcel has developed an totally online solution to the 'last mile' problem - as a customer we do not want to wait in all day for a delivery so we can now use My Parcel as an intermediary. The brilliance behind this web-based system is Ipswich based A Recipe for Success who have worked with Hugo Rose to develop the back end systems enabling customers to have their parcels delivered to a secure depot from which they can collect.
The presentation is attached to this page and can be downloaded (be patient as it is quite large). What you won't see is the live demo we had at the event.

Karl Moyse from Jacob Bailey then gave us a look behind BT Intelligent Solutions and we saw how their systems collect and analyse data which is used particularly to profile customers and target services which are of interest to them.
BT does not need to rely on Search Engines but it too monitors the referrals (click throughs from other sites) and is particularly those from other BT sites. As you would expect, their site monitors traffic on a daily basis and can immediately see the effect of direct marketing campaigns. The presentation is linked to the site and can be downloaded.

The Suffolk eBusiness Club was then unveiled and we ran through the entire event booking system from start to finish so attendees could see the email production and event planning area of the site, then through to how we see who has booked and then those that attend. We also looked at the website and email stats. This website is the product of Datapartners and Peter Banks was on hand at the Q&A session to answer any technical issues.

The Q&A brought up some great questions, observations and suggestions so it was very useful to us all. Many thanks to all those who contributed towards this event.

The whisper in the corridor over lunch was that it was the 'best yet' which sets a challenge for the rest of the programme!

Thanks to Matthew Oakley, a new member from Christies Care Ltd:
"Thanks for your email (assuming it wasn't one of those automated ones!) and I found today's event very interesting. As a fairly new and inexperienced web developer, I found it beneficial to see how other developers are dealing with clients problems and also to speak to the other attendees and hear their hopes and concerns for their websites.

Before being asked to attend on behalf of my employers, I was not aware of any e-business clubs and it was great to be able to meet new people that are interested and experienced in the same field as
myself."
