New Web Accessibility Guidelines - 16-Oct-07

According to various sources, e.g Outlaw.com and The Register, updated web accessibility guidelines are likely to be introduced in 2008. However, critics are dubious about their potential effectiveness. The suggestion is that guidelines will be ignored after they are published!

The process used to create a Web Content Accessibility Guide (WCAG) is being blamed in part for the delay in release. Talks have been going on since 1999 about updating.

The final version is already attracting criticism for various reasons. For instance, the whole concept of the web has developed so much since 1999, and different "standards" have emerged in, for example, Europe and Japan.

Even if a credible WCAG is finally produced, webmasters may conduct a cost evaluation analysis that may decide that non-compliance is a financially-attractive alternative to the risk of a fine. That assumes that the wording will be legally watertight!

The whole question of policing is another issue. How effective can it be?
