Broadband Prices Still Falling - 21-Feb-08

The uSwitch.com website is reporting that broadband prices are dropping rapidly, providing both consumers and business with best ever value for money. Overall, the price of standard broadband has dropped by 36% in four years.

Highlights of the report include:

* Broadband is becoming faster than ever with today’s standard broadband 16 times faster than in 2004.
* The biggest fall in prices has been seen at AOL: from £28 for 0.5Mb service in 2004 to £15 for 8Mb service in 2008, a reduction of 46%
* Orange retains 4 year title of most expensive provider for standalone broadband. Orange was the highest priced 0.5Mbps broadband supplier in December 2003 charging £27.99 a month for standalone broadband. It remains the highest priced supplier for 8Mbps standalone broadband today, charging £20 a month.
* Nearly 5 million homes pay over £20 a month for their broadband, wasting £162 million a year.

uSwitch.com also offers advice to consumers choosing a new broadband service, including:

* Be aware that the “up to xMb” speed offered by suppliers is the maximum connection speed the provider offers. Actual speeds experienced may be significantly lower due to factors such as the quality and length of the physical line from the exchange to the customer’s premises.
* Any email address linked to your current supplier will no longer be available once you have switched supplier. Make sure you have informed all your contacts about this change of email address and back-up any important emails and contact details stored in your supplier’s webmail service!
* If your package offers “unlimited” downloads per month, make sure you read the small print on the supplier’s fair usage policy.
