ICANN Problem for Domain Name Owners - 16-Jul-08

Do you own domain names? If so, please be aware of a recent attempted phishing attack by parties unknown purporting to represent ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (and the governing body for domain names worldwide).

According to respected domain trader Corporation Service Company (CSC), the attack was restricted to a 4 hour window on 24 June. The fraudulent e-mails, which purported to come from icann@icannresolve.com, directed recipients to a website where they were asked to submit key domain information before a deadline of July 25th to avoid disruption to their service. However, if your in-house domain adminstrator did respond to the request for information, you are recommended to contact your domain name registrar immediately to change login and password details.

CSC recommends that companies:
* review their email policies to ensure staff know how to handle suspicious e-mails.
* advise staff that providing sensitive business information in response to e-mail requests is strictly prohibited.

What I find surprising is that ICANN have not found it necessary to admit publicly on their website that such an attack has taken place. There is no press release that I could find a week after the event; no comment; nothing! But then again, how many of us would want to admit that we have egg on our faces?
