Windows 7 White Paper - 01-Dec-09

After almost 3 years on the market, Windows Vista is being replaced by Windows 7. So, for anyone thinking of upgrading, some useful light reading might be "Windows 7 - What You Need to Know", a new free White Paper, published by appiChar.

Windows Vista has not been the biggest Microsoft success ever, perhaps due to the ongoing popularity of Windows XP. Many organisations will have avoided upgrading to Windows Vista as Windows XP was percieved as “good enough”. Perhaps Microsoft felt the need to launch Vista to milk the cash cow of upgrade opportunity without sufficient innovation and improvement?

One new feature of Windows 7 is AppLocker, which allows administrators to designate a list of allowed applications for client machines. Different rules can be based on the publisher (e.g. Adobe or Symantec), program (e.g. Flash Player or Acrobat Reader), version or even file location.

Windows 7 is quicker than Vista (not saying much?) but not quite as quick as XP. However, bearing in mind technological developments over the last 10 years, that may not be a bad performance.

Although Windows 7 started shipping in October, existing users of Windows XP will be pleased to know that XP should continue to be available until 2011 - allowing plenty of time to complete a transition to the new standard.
