Google Goes Social Networking - 18-Feb-10

Google has recently announced its answer to sites such as Facebook. Google Buzz will work alongside Googlemail to compete with more established sites.

Unlike Facebook, the focus on Google Buzz is likely to be more business orientated right from the start. Apparently, Google is already playing in-house with an enterprise version of the product.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin described the enterprise development as "very compelling" and a real boost to productivity. Product Manager Tod Jackson has identified that the vast amount of data involved in social networking requires processing to become more manageable and therefore some overlap with Google search technology may generate a more useful and refined tool.

Regrettably, this new Buzz toy may have been launched without adequate testing. Many concerns have been expressed that Buzz appears to have created networks without reference to the user. Google is now finding out that just because someone is a contact via Googlemail that doesn't make them the bosom friend with whom you wish to share all your intimate moments or darkest secrets.

Google tends to test new products via the Google Trusted Tester program, a network of friends and family of Google employees given access to products before launch. Seems that Buzz may have missed this stage of testing!
